Surprised Calf

I obviously could not paint the calf as he jumped on seeing me, nor could I photograph the moment as it had gone before I knew I wanted to catch it. What I did do was to draw and paint the calf from life and then, once very familiar with his anatomy, concentrate hard on building the memory of the exact moment, the blend of surprise, curiosity and fear that he must have felt – and me!
