I painted this entirely en plein air while I stood on a small bridge overlooking the river Titchborne. Here the river is fast and shallow, and from the bridge I could see through the water to the stones beneath, whilst in the distance it was a a reflective ribbon snaking it’s way through the water meadows around Alresford. My own challenge was to reconcile and describe these different perceptions of the river in one painting. I tried to keep it fresh and immediate, and not to overwork any of it.
