The purple of the anemones was so lovely, velvety in its dark places and a faded Indigo where it caught the light. I wanted to try and reproduce it’s richness, so chose an old ginger jar ( miraculously dug up complete by my husband in our back garden a decade ago) because of the gentle blue glaze of its pattern. It also had a pearliness, either as a result of its age, or because it had lain under the earth for a century. I used a very limited palette for this painting because the purple was clean, like stained glass, not a myriad of overlaid colours. A shell-pink old table cloth gave light warmth behind and I used Indian yellow in the flower centres to give it some acidic bite.
This painting was featured at The Grange Festival Exhibition.
