I did not want to do a careful botanical study of the sweet peas on this occasion, but instead to try and capture the intensity of their colours, the riot of the mass of them – like an invasion of the senses, to visually attempt to suggest their heady smell. I chose a faded checker board tea towel underneath a favourite old jug, the viridian squares to complement the hectic pinks, the squares to give an ordered foil to the lively chaos of the flowers, and the earth colours of the jug to anchor it all. There was a surprising flash of cobalt in the jug that I hadn’t really taken in until it began to pulse away in response to the company it was keeping.
